"THE DUSUN"Singapore womenswear label Ong Shunmugam launches its ready-to-wear cheongsam collection for 2018.Seven year old label Ong Shunmugam releases Cheongsam 2018, the brand's cheongsam collection for the year. A tradition since 2011, the label dedicates a collection every year entirely to the modern interpretation and appropriation of traditional Chinese womenswear. Recently the collection was showcased at The Shanghai Bar, JW Marriot Kuala Lumpur on 6th February, 2018.
Explains designer Priscilla Shunmugam, "Cheongsam 2018 is a deliberate exercise in refinement and consistency, as we continue to nurture the design vocabulary that we have quietly pioneered over the years. Good design takes time and if you give it that time - it should last a pretty long time. "
Thematically, the collection of 12 looks draws from a jungle retreat Shunmugam attended in 2017 in Seremban, Malaysia. Tucked away in natural surrioundings and vegetation, along with a largely fruit and plant-based diet, palette and textile choices reflect this. "Both the Japanese laces and the Indonesian batiks we used carry extremely unique floral or leafy motifs, as does our custom print loudly and exclusively designed for the season," adds Shunmugam.
From 18 January 2018, Cheongsam 2018 will retail physically at Atelier Ong Shunmugam. Prices range between SGD388 to SGD988.

Multiple award-winning Singapore label Ong Shunmugam presented its first ever Raya collection “Gadis Perkasa” at The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, 30th March 2017 to a full house of media, celebrities and fans. This marks the second time homegrown retailer Shoes Shoes Shoes presents Malaysian designer Priscilla Shunmugam’s work in Kuala Lumpur.

Gadis Perkasa is the brand’s first collection dedicated to contemporary interpretations of traditional Malay womenswear. Manifested through surprising and progressive ways, key silhouettes in the Malay womenswear vocabulary such as the Baju Kurung, Kebaya Labuh, Baju Kedah and the Kebaya Renda are revisited in their original forms but with a fresh pair of eyes.
Stringing together traditional textiles from Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan and Korea - the collection of 12 looks attempts to widen the conversation on Malay womenswear against a multi-cultural and multi-faith backdrop.
“This is our way of continuing to take the stand that we have intuitively held - that fashion design should be inclusive - that it can and should be thinking of all women, all skin tones, all faiths,” explains designer Priscilla Shunmugam.
